The Mystery at the Core
Recovery, at its deepest level, is not merely a return to comfort or the pursuit of nice things. It is a confrontation with a profound, central truth—a truth that reveals itself when all distractions and survival mechanisms are stripped away. At the core of our existence is a great, awe-inspiring mystery, surrounded by the intricate branches of our daily lives—our habits, needs, and pursuits. These branches, unique as they may seem, share a detachment from the core. They are games we play to avoid facing the unanswerable question at the center.
Good recovery work, and honest spiritual practice, must happen within that core sphere. It is the place where we see ourselves and others with no pretense, no filters—just as raw, vulnerable humans, confronting the truth together. It’s a space where we share an oscillating awareness of our fear and awe in the face of the mystery. This encounter is harrowing, like a glimpse behind the curtain of existence, but it is essential. To truly grow and heal, we must journey there, accepting the challenge of seeing life for what it is and connecting with that central truth in ourselves and each other.
